A similar object can be found in Read 2010, page 10, no. 24. Read states that with this type it is ‘uncertain whether this is a button-and-loop fastener, toggle-fastener or a pestle from a Roman period (?) cosmetic pestle and mortar (pers.comm. Dr Ralph Jackson, forthcoming). Despite an apparent lack of surviving costume with such an item still attached, or depiction in a contemporary portrait, a suggestion that it is a possible fastener for a Victorian coachman’s cloak is doubtful.’ (Read 2010 Page 7).

Other similar objects on the PAS database eg. YORYM-E065AE are dated to 1700-1800 stating: 'This object is one of a group of artefacts which were originally identified by Ralph Jackson and Sally Worrell as cosmetic pestles, dating from the late Iron Age or early Roman period circa AD 100 - 200 as seen in SWYOR-E137B1 and DENO-D53724. However, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that at least some of these items are in fact clothing fasteners; toggles similar to those on a duffle coat, as in SF-332DF0 and SWYOR-9FE646. One piece of evidence is the distribution of PAS examples, which differ from the distribution of cosmetic sets. See the discussion on page 6 of Jackson (2010) Cosmetic Sets of Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, and compare number 513 and 593. The date of these toggles is still unknown as none have been found in dated contexts.'
