Emile van Rinsum worked as a communityworker in the Provenierswijk, Agniesebuurt and het Nieuwe Westen in the city of Rotterdam.

In Het Nieuwe Westen, he coordinated projects on social safety, among other things and produced the neighborhoodfestival the Nieuwe Feesten. He started here with the streetcampaign 'opZoomeren' and also invented this verb (included in the Dikke van Dalen). In the Provenierswijk and the Ageniesebuurt he was mainly involved in the process of urbanrenewal (renovation, new buildings, residentparticipation and development of new facilities).

Since 2003 is Emile van Rinsum the director of the Rotterdam Environmental Center (RMC). The RMC supports more than 70 local community organizations and is initiating and organizing sustainabilityprojects on energy, urbanagriculture and - nature, climatechange and climateadaptian, cleanair, mobility and citymaking. The RMC is giving advice to the Rotterdam citycouncil concerning enviromental and green policy-issues.

Before Emile worked as community worker, youth worker, theaterdirector, eventproducer, journalist, municipalcouncilor. He is the founder of opzoomeren (upsummering) and co-founders of the regional radio and TV station in the Rotterdam region: "RTV Rijnmond" and rooftopfarm the "DakAkker".
