The article suggests as if the inhabintants were against the demolishion of the old houses of JJP Oud. But on the contrary they were in favor of new houses (as soon as possible) and against a restoration project (which had taken much longer). The new houses look like any houses in the Netherlands and have nothing unique. The old houses by JJP Oud - although very much run down - had much more atmosphere to it and made it into every history book of famous dutch architecture. The protest against the destruction of the old houses came mainly from Germany. In the Netherlands monument protection has to deliver money in the long run. At the same time the JJP Oud-houses were demolished the facade of the "Schielandhuis" in Rotterdam-center was reconstructed from nothing at great cost. The Schielandhuis today is a magnet for tourists and investors (and pulls money into town). The housing of JJP Oud unfortunately not. So the housing was demolished.
