Het enige wat tot nu toe bekend is, is dat het Tsjadisch leger op 20 april heeft gecommuniceerd dat Déby is overleden. Het is niet onwaarschijnlijk dat hij ook op de 20ste is overleden, maar er is op dit moment geen betrouwbare bron die een exacte datum kan bevestigen. CNN stelt hier: "Faithful to the oath made to the nation and the Chadian people, the Marshal of Chad, President of the Republic, Head of State, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Idriss Déby Itno, has just breathed his last defending the sovereign nation on the battlefield," Agouna said in his statement. "It is with deep bitterness that we announce to the Chadian people the death this Tuesday, April 20, 2021, of Chadian Marshal Idriss Déby Itno as a result of his injuries on the frontline," he said. Reuters rapporteert: FACT claimed responsibility for the injuries that killed Deby on Monday. He was wounded by gunfire in the village of Mele near the town of Nokou, more than 300 km (190 miles) north of N’Djamena, and evacuated to the capital where he later died, the FACT spokesman said. The presidency has not commented on the exact circumstances of his death. Nou zijn de rebellen natuurlijk geen betrouwbare bron, maar helemaal zeker is het moment van overlijden dus niet (en zal waarschijnlijk ook niet duidelijker worden).
